Storing or using electric scooters during winter.

 

 

When the scooter is being used in winter, the battery must not get into contact with water, humidity, sand and / or salt (when the streets are sanded). The scooter needs to be cleaned with a soft piece of dry cloth after every ride. Low temperatures cause a reduced performance.

To make sure, your driving pleasure continues next spring, we have compiled an overview of what to keep in mind when storing or using scooters during winter. As with all battery-equipped devices, the battery requires a little attention to get through the cold time of the year.

  • When storing the scooter, it needs to be clean and dry– The storage location needs to be dry and neither too warm nor too cold – a temperature between 15 – 25 °C is ideal
  • When storing the scooter, the state of charge needs to be between 30% and 50%
  • Every three months latest, the scooter needs to be charged for approx. 30 minutes
  • In general, battery-equipped devices must be stored away from flammable materials

An incorrect storage or an extended period without charging the battery can cause an irreparable depth discharge. This is not a warranty case.

Following the winter break, the scooter is best handled like a new vehicle. Prior to the first ride, all security-relevant features need to be checked (brakes, lights, folding mechanisms, etc.). The battery needs to be fully charged and then once completely driven empty. It might happen that the state of charge is not correctly indicated – this will settle due to this procedure.

Vodafone Germany partnership with Egret Scooters

Vodafone Germany announced a partnership with Egret Scooters by Walberg Urban Electrics to launch a connected scooter. The ElektroRoller2Go will target the vehicle sharing market, with the Vodafone Sim allowing users to locate a free scooter with a smartphone app. The foldable scooter is similar to an electric bike and able to travel up to 22 miles on a single charge.

Battery Capacity – Wheel Buying Guide

Overall, an electric micro-mobility device consumes 10Wh per km at 20 ° C on flat and smooth ground without wind, at a constant speed, with a user of 75kg and a tire inflated to the recommended pressure (firm tire).

The amount of energy contained in your battery is expressed as Wh. Some will tell you about Ah for Ampere-hour. Simply multiply the Ah by the Volts V (the battery voltage) to get the Wh.

Under the conditions described above, a battery of 200Wh will generally offer 20km (12.5 miles) of autonomy, while a battery of 850Wh will theoretically offer 85km (53 miles) of autonomy. A more capacitive battery may seem ideal, but be aware of the following:

  • A more capacitive battery recharges less often, and thus lasts longer
  • A more capacitive battery is longer to recharge (downside…)
  • A more capacitive battery increases the weight of the vehicle
  • The North and South Circular Roads together form the second ring road around London, averaging 10–15 miles (16–24 km) in diameter., so it will be necessary to analyze your daily journeys

A question often comes up: is it better to start with an electric wheel of 340Wh or 680Wh? We advise 680Wh, especially to enjoy the power much longer.

  • A 340Wh electric monowheel offers approximately 20km (12.5 miles) of range if you start driving in a sporty way, meaning that the last 10 km will be limited (the wheel will decrease in speed and acceleration, notifying you by premature beeps) The battery will have decreased in voltage and current intensity deliverable after the first 10 km.
  • A 680Wh electric single-wheel offers about 40km of range if you start driving in sporty driving, which means that the last 10 km will be quieter because your instantly deliverable current is initially doubled: 680Wh batteries are composed Of 2 packs of 340Wh mounted in parallel, which doubles the amperage deliverable when the battery is 100%. After 50% of battery consumption, you will still have the same amperage as a 340Wh. After 75% battery consumption, you will have dropped amperage and will have to slow down.
  • Moreover, 680Wh recharges 3 times less often and therefore undergoes 3 times less the effect of the 1000 cycles of maximum life.

The capacities widespread to date are the following: 260Wh, 340Wh, 520Wh, 680Wh, 840Wh up to 1600Wh

Be careful, however, the delivered power drops when the battery empties. On the electric wheel, stabilization becomes less strong or less reactive. It is for this reason that we advise to accelerate smoothly once passed below the 50% charge of the battery of the electric unicycle.

Electric Scooter Maintenance | How to

Electric Scooters still an expensive item and should be properly maintained to ensure that you get the highest possible value from your investment. By maintaining your e-scooter correctly you can extend the life of your vehicle and save yourself the headache of having to pay for replacement parts.

General Cleaning

Keeping your electric scooter clean is essential preventative care. By cleaning your e-scooter after each ride, you will prevent buildup of debris and dirt that could lead to more serious issues.

When cleaning, make sure to not use high power water or jet stream hoses as the water will infiltrate the electrical components and cause damage. Also, you don’t want the water to remove the lubricant from the bearings, which will cause them to move slower and possibly corrode.

Use a toothbrush and warm water to wash away any dirt, sand, or other debris that has gathered under the deck. Once complete, remove all remaining moisture with a dry towel.

Another preventative step that you should take is not to leave your scooter out in the elements. Exceedingly hot weather could cause the battery to degrade as well as disturb the electrical components. Also, any precipitation could harm the electrical components or cause the body to rust.

General Inspections 

The main things that you’ll want to check are all of the bolts, check to see that they are all properly tightened and that nothing is coming loose. For the brake pads, (Egret TEN)  you’ll want to inspect for excessive wear to prevent damage to the tires.

It’s also a good idea to read through the instruction manual that came with your electric scooter and see what other preventative care the company who manufactured the scooter recommends.

Tires 

Most brands of electric scooter comes with hard rubber wheels and does not require to much attention. Inflatable wheels makes the ride much more comfortable but it also requires much care, in your instruction manual, you will find the proper psi for your tires. Check them weekly to ensure that the psi is correct.

Lights

Check all lights works properly, we do recommend to turn the lights always on, even in day light, it’ s really important make your self visible to others .

Battery

Taking steps to prevent battery degradation will result in a much better functioning electric scooter.

Always keep your battery fully charged when not in use. Also, store your battery at room temperature. If the battery is exposed to prolonged heat or coldness, it could result on decreased functioning.

If you notice that your battery is working poorly, perform a full conditioning cycle. To do this, run your battery until it is completely empty and then charge it back to full power. This will fix many small problems, similar to a computer reboot. You may have to do this two or three times to achieve the desired effect.

After riding in wet or rain it’s important to remove all remaining moisture with a dry towel before storage.

Hub Motors Are Changing The Electric Skateboard Industry

The biggest thing in electric skateboards for 2016 is in-hub motors. Will Hub Motors Redefine The Electric Skateboard Industry Or Is It Just Another Fad?

First we need to break down the two different kinds of motors used for electric skateboards.

Pretty much every board currently on the market with the exception of a few cheap Chinese boards that are filtering in through Alibaba and eBay are all Belt-driven motors. Right now the defacto standard that all other boards are judged against is the Boosted 2000 Dual+ monster. This board has cracked the code and made something that is really fun to ride and still pretty safe. The board is relatively heavy and expensive but from everything I’ve read online, Boosted really stands behind their product. That might change in the future, but for now, they are the yardstick by which other electric skateboard companies are judged.

Advantages of Belt Driven Motors

  • You can get the gearing ratio perfect for your application : Every electric motor has a power range that the motor works best at, the trick is matching that optimum speed with the right sized skateboard wheel for that application (generally under 100mm for street use). Using a belt allows you to do just that.
  • The motor is slightly more sheltered from road debris as it can be moved up and away from the ground.

Disadvantages of Belt Driving Motors

  • You gotta replace the belts : Not that often but if you’re commuting with your eSkateboard every day for extended distances the belts will wear out. If your belt breaks on the road and it’s not a dual drive system then you’re going to be kicking it home.
  • You can’t push it : If the battery dies your board is not going to roll without a whole lot of friction. More than likely you’re going to bend over pick up your board and carry it the rest of the way.
  • On high power boards the motor is still open to the elements : On some of the lower power 24v boards the motor is completely sealed. Every ‘high power’ motors I’ve seen for electric skateboards are almost always open to the elements on one side. This creates the potential for water, debris and metal objects to find their way inside the motor which is going to suck.

 

Direct Drive electric skateboard motors

The more common electric motors that can be found on most of the more inexpensive electric skateboards in China are Direct Drive (DD) hubs. These motors are out runners (the wheel is what turns) and they have a 1:1 motor ratio. Every time the motor does one revolution, so does the wheel. The new Blink Board by Acton it’s the best example of transition from belt drive to DD Hub

Advantages of DD Hubs

  • Simplicity: The DD design is the simplest you’re going to find. Other than melting the windings or the insulation on the phase wires or overheating there is little you can do to destroy them. Since it is a outrunner there are no brushes to wear down meaning it should run well pretty much forever.
  • Nothing to wear out: No clutches, no gears, no pulleys. The only thing that can fail really is the bearings on the motor. The Manta drive shown above has some pretty beefy bearings on both sides of the wheel so that is pretty unlikely.
  • You can kick it : That’s right the DD design is the ONLY design that allows you to use your skateboard like a normal skateboard when your battery dies. A well designed DD motor will have very minimal cogging effect so it will have little resistance to being pushed.

Disadvantages of DD Hubs

  • Less power than a comparable Geared hub or a Belt drive: Since the geared hubs and the belt driven motors both get to spin a lot faster than the DD motor then you will need MORE watts to make the DD motor feel as powerful as a Geared or belt drive system.
  • Heat dissipation: Since the windings are inside the motor, it is hard for heat to work its way to the outside of the hub unless it has ventilation holes. Such a small motor doing so much work is going to get very hot. There is a chance that this will be an excellent application for ferrofluid cooling, but as far as I know, no one is doing that on a large-scale yet. If you have ventilation holes then you have to worry about water and debris getting inside your motor. Only the least powerful skateboards (less than 400W from China like this one) are sealed, everything else has massive air holes in it for cooling.
  • The Urethane wheel keeps the heat inside the motor.

It seems to me that the biggest problems that skateboard motors face is cooling. While having DD Hub motors might move the industry forward, they still haven’t solved this fundamental problem. What will the future hold for electric skateboards? All I know is that it is an exciting time and that even if the current batch of hub motors fail to live up to users expectations, they are still moving the industry forward in a good way.

Electric Vehicle Classifications & Limitations

RAKER is legally classified as a light electric motorcycle under EU Type Approval L1E. This class limits it,by law, to a maximum speed of 28mph and a motor of 4000W or less. This class requires RAKER, by law,to be registered with the DVLA, to display a licence plate, for the rider to be insured and to wear a DOT approved helmet at all times. A minimum licence consisting of a CBT is required to ride RAKER.

WILL MY NEW ELECTRIC SCOOTER NEED TO BE REGISTERED?

If you intend to only use your electric scooter on private property, then no registration is necessary. When used on public highways, however, your electric scooter must be registered as a new vehicle with the DVLA. You will need to complete a V55/4 application form which is available at your local DVLA office. The registration fee is currently £55.00. Stigos come supplied with a Certificate of Conformity (COC) and Import Document to help with this process.

DO I NEED TO TAX MY ELECTRIC SCOOTER?

No, electric scooters are exempt from road tax.

DOES MY ELECTRIC SCOOTER REQUIRE AN MOT?

Yes, but only after 3 years, and then every year thereafter. Electric scooters have very few moving parts with virtually no maintenance required. But wearable parts such as brakes, tyres and lights will need to be checked regularly.

DOES MY ELECTRIC SCOOTER NEED TO BE INSURED?

Your electric scooter must be fully insured. Your insurance company will use the same classification as a 50cc motorbike.

DO I NEED TO WEAR A HELMET?

Legally you are responsible for wearing a motorbike helmet when riding an electric scooter.

DO I NEED A LICENCE TO RIDE AN ELECTRIC SCOOTER ON PUBLIC ROADS IN THE UK?

Yes. You must have a valid provisional or full driving license covering mopeds or motorcycles to ride electric scooters (which are classified as mopeds). If you already have a full licence covering cars you may be able to use it automatically as a license for riding our electric scooters.

As with all mopeds and motorcycles, you may need to complete a compulsory basic training course (CBT) to validate your license before you can ride on the road.

If you obtained your full driving license before 1 February 2001 you do not need to complete CBT.
If you obtained your full driving license on or after 1 February 2001 then CBT is required after which you can ride without L plates.
If you have a provisional moped license then CBT is required and you must display L plates until you qualify for a full license – provisional entitlement with CBT is valid for two years after which CBT must be retaken.

Although the E-Twow Booster and the Egret One GT can indeed be both folded very easily (and similar size),  the E-Twow has a clear advantage when it comes to the weight: At 10.8 kg, the Booster Plus the lightest self-propelled electric scooters on the market.

The One GT on the other hand weighs 13.5 kg. And while you do not notice the weight when driving, one perceives it quite clear when it is time to lift the scooter.

The Booster also have a usefull belt to carry your Scooter on the shoulder, or when belt is removed also a very usefull handhold to carry your scooter in one hand! Carry Belt E-Twow

Both brands have wheeled carrier bags in accesories for long distance transport.

Range

For the usual daily use both take you to destination (and back) without in between recharge.

However, the booster provides a significant advantage in terms of coverage compared to the One GT:

The booster will take you far up to 30 km before you have to recharge it. Compare this with the One GT, which has the range of 25 km, do not forget that this is the range under testing (no headwind, no gradients, minimum stopping and a driver weight of 70 kg).

In the real world, we have 20-25 km from the booster (still more than enough)  and acceptable 20 km from the One GT.

Battery & Power

The One GT is powered by a 36V 8Ah Li-Ion battery and a 250 watt motor.

The booster derives its strength from its 33V 6.5Ah Li-Po battery, coupled with a powerful 500 watt motor.

New Batteries for 2018:

  • 33V 6.5Ah Booster Plus: It is the standalone battery inherited from the powerful Booster S2, perfect for riders from 60kg up to 80kg. Handle hills great and offers a long and trusted cycle life. Max speed 30kpm, total range *25km
  • 36V 7.5Ah Booster S: The extra capacity gives you 5km more range, *30km in total. Max speed 33kph and the more voltage mean more torque. Perfect for riders over 80kg or hilly commuting journeys.
  • 36V 10.5Ah Booster V: 5th-anniversary celebration, *38km range up to 38kph. maximum torque option for demanding routes.

While both scooters offer similar performance, the booster has a great advantage when it comes to the charging time. The Boosters 3.5 Amp “fast charger” allows you to fully charge the battery in just 2 hours (the fastest time among all electric adult scooters).

The One GT, on the other hand, takes 2 hours to reach 70% but it needs 6 hours until the battery is fully charged.

Brakes

The booster is equipped with two brakes, one recuperation front (KERS, the battery recharges every time you brake) and a manual friction brake rear (like a regular kick scooter, for additional braking force).

The One GT has double drum brake front and back reduces the stopping distance dramatically.

Wheels and suspension

Both scooters have puncture-resistant, solid rubber wheels. However, we are dealing with a case where size really plays a role: With larger 200 mm wheels the Booster offers a much smoother ride than the One GT.

The significantly smaller 160 mm wheels of One GT provide a much bumpy driving experience than the Booster (especially on asphalt and roads with cracks and holes).

Both, however, are equipped with dual suspension, with shock absorbers on the front and rear wheels, which contribute to a softer ride.

Design

We are big fans of the design of the One GT with a sleek, modern look and it’s wider handlebar, the One GT looks awesome it also feels more robust when riding it.

The design of the Booster PLUS is also top-notch. It’s thin footboard and the rear friction brake makes it appear as a conventional scooter for those looking for discretion.

Both are solidly constructed from high quality aluminum. Where we have noticed that the handles on Booster become slightly wobbly while driving than in One GT, the Egret feels solid.

The booster is available in four colors (white, black, green or gray), the One GT in black only.

Extras

A feature that we love the Booster, is the integrated front and rear light

The spotlight is a bright LED lamp that illuminates your path you. And the rear lights are wired so that they light up every time you brake. He also has a Horn-button, which is integrated into the display (Note: the sound of the horn is a bit annoying and we do not use it too often).

The One GT comes with rear and really bright front light plus it has a handy little kickstand.

Both have lots of extra accessories to choose from.
